Winter Storm Alert: Onondaga County Issues Travel Advisory (2026)

Onondaga County has issued a travel advisory as a winter storm approaches Central New York, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions. The advisory, which does not restrict travel, warns drivers of potential dangers on the roads. All of Central New York is under a winter weather warning until 7 p.m. on Monday, with the National Weather Service predicting one to two feet of snow through Monday morning. The snow is expected to be most intense today, with 12 inches or more falling in 12 hours. This severe weather is part of a broader state of emergency declared in New York, as well as over a dozen other states, as the storm moves from Texas to Maine. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced travel restrictions, including a ban on long combination tandem vehicles on the Thruway, which took effect at 6 a.m. today. The storm has already caused disruptions, with courts and schools closing, flights being canceled, and power outages affecting 900 houses and businesses in Madison County. This extreme cold and snow are expected to persist, making it the coldest week in years for the region.
