Texas Rangers Offseason Moves: Pitching Focus & Lineup Changes | 2026 MLB Season Preview (2026)

The Texas Rangers' Offseason Strategy: Pitching Over Power?

The Rangers are prioritizing pitching in their offseason moves, but is this the right call?

While the Rangers have been active in the offseason, their focus on pitching has raised some eyebrows. After a major trade for Brandon Nimmo and signing free agents like Danny Jansen and Chris Martin, the team seems content with its current lineup. President of baseball operations, Chris Young, hinted that the Rangers are unlikely to add more position players, emphasizing pitching as their main focus.

But here's where it gets interesting: the Rangers' lineup is far from set in stone. With the departure of Adolis Garcia and Jonah Heim, the team has gaps to fill. Although they've signaled internal solutions for second base, the infield corners remain a concern. The current bench group also lacks depth, leaving many fans wondering if another bat is needed.

And this is the part most people miss: the Rangers' payroll constraints. Despite a busy offseason, the team is aiming to reduce payroll, currently projected at $176MM, down from $216MM in 2025. This financial reality may limit their ability to make significant additions, especially with high-profile free agents like Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette still available.

The Rangers' rotation boasts an impressive top three with Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, and Jack Leiter. However, the depth beyond them is questionable. Prospects like Kumar Rocker and Jacob Latz have potential but are unproven, and the injury histories of deGrom and Eovaldi add uncertainty. One or two injuries could leave the Rangers scrambling for solutions.

The team's focus on pitching is understandable, but it may leave them vulnerable in other areas. The Rangers could benefit from adding a versatile infielder or a seasoned reliever to bolster their depth. While they've been opportunistic in the market, the question remains: is their current strategy enough to compete in a tough division?

What do you think? Should the Rangers prioritize pitching or look to strengthen their lineup? Share your thoughts in the comments!
