The Giants' Offseason: A Budget-Friendly Approach
San Francisco's off-season has been characterized by a certain level of fiscal conservatism. Their acquisitions have been limited to minor signings and a couple of mid-tier starting pitchers, Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle. The front office has signaled a reluctance to spend big this off-season. This suggests the Giants might opt to stick with Drew Gilbert, Luis Matos, and Jerar Encarnacion, who all saw time in right field towards the end of last season after Mike Yastrzemski was traded.
Drew Gilbert brought a lot of energy and was defensively sound, but his performance at the plate left much to be desired. He had a batting average of just .190, an on-base percentage of .248, and a slugging percentage of .350, with only three home runs and 13 runs batted in. That kind of production is unlikely to cut it in the long run.
Luis Matos had a hot streak for about a week, as he is prone to do, before cooling off and eventually being sent back down to the minors. With no minor league options remaining, the 2026 season will be a critical test to see if he can establish himself at the major league level.
Jerar Encarnacion showed flashes of brilliance in 2025, including hot streaks during spring training and again in August, but injuries hampered his progress. He possesses raw power and has demonstrated his capabilities when his bat is hot, but his health is a major concern heading into the next season.
If the Giants head into 2026 with these three as their primary options in right field, they could be facing significant challenges.
