Lakers Highlights: Jaxson Hayes' NBA Slam Dunk Contest Dream Falls Short (2026)

Lakers' Jaxson Hayes Misses Out on NBA Slam Dunk Contest: A Dream Unfulfilled

The NBA All-Star Weekend, held at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, was a special occasion for the Los Angeles Lakers players, even though the event was technically hosted by the L.A. Clippers. The Lakers had two players, Luka Doncic and LeBron James, make the All-Star team, and Jaxson Hayes was also in attendance to compete in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Hayes has been known for his impressive dunks during his three seasons with the Lakers, and this was his first opportunity to showcase his skills on the biggest stage in the Dunk Contest. He faced off against Carter Bryant of the San Antonio Spurs, Jase Richardson of the Orlando Magic, and Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat. The judges for the event were Brent Barry, Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson, and Dominique Wilkins.

Hayes performed last in the first round, attempting a dunk while jumping from the free throw line. However, he was a step ahead, resulting in a 44.6 score from the judges, which ranked him fourth. Despite this, Hayes kicked off the second round with a familiar through-the-legs dunk on a pass from himself, scoring 47.2.

Although Hayes' performance was solid, he ultimately fell short, not making it to the top two and being eliminated before the final round. His combined score in the first two rounds was 91.8, ahead of Jase Richardson (88.8) but behind Bryant (94.8) and Johnson (92.8).

Hayes had always dreamed of competing in the Slam Dunk Contest, and before his first appearance, he discussed the significance of the event for him. "It would be really special if it was in Cleveland or Indiana, that’s close to my family," he admitted. "But for me, I’ve always dreamed of being in the Dunk Contest, it’s just something you do as a kid. Obviously, making it to the NBA and being an All-Star, stuff like that (is what you dream of), but for me, I was always big into the Dunk Contest, if you guys can’t tell by the way I play. So yeah, just excited. When I got that call, I was definitely down."

While Hayes missed out on the title, his performance was still impressive, and he left the event with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Although he didn't win, his passion for the Dunk Contest and his dedication to his craft were evident, and he will undoubtedly continue to strive for excellence in his future endeavors.
