FOG Architecture Transforms Beijing Spa into a Multi-Sensory Healing Experience | YUSPA Design Tour (2026)

Unwind and Recharge: FOG Architecture's Beijing Spa Experience

A spa is more than just a quiet place; it's an immersive journey into relaxation and healing. FOG Architecture, a Chinese design studio, has crafted a sanctuary in Beijing that transcends the ordinary. With a focus on multi-sensory experiences, they've created a space where every element, from lighting to materials, tells a story of tranquility and rejuvenation.

The YUSPA retail spa, nestled in the bustling Sanlitun shopping district, is a testament to FOG Architecture's philosophy. Instead of a mere 'quiet haven', the design aims to captivate the senses and guide customers through a transformative journey. As you step inside, a long entrance corridor sets the stage, leading to a captivating water feature and a reception area.

The reception area greets visitors with a feature wall showcasing essential oils, their aromatic scents filling the air. At the heart of the display area, a striking copper table presents a collection of ready-to-spray essential oils, while stone columns and copper shelves create a display of products. The design team, led by Zhang Chi and Zhan Di, has masterfully utilized lighting as the primary design tool.

In the public area, bright lights illuminate the products, creating a vibrant atmosphere. As you venture deeper into the spa, the lighting gradually softens, with only the floor illuminated in the most intimate spaces. Sheer curtains and electric sliding doors serve as partitions, allowing light to flow while maintaining privacy.

The materials used throughout the spa create a harmonious balance of warm and cool tones. A concrete base provides a solid foundation, while copper accents add a touch of elegance. Wooden furniture softens the space, creating a cozy ambiance. FOG Architecture emphasizes that the design avoids excessive decoration, ensuring a restrained and neutral atmosphere that doesn't overstimulate the senses.

The combination of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses is key to the immersive experience. The sound of flowing water from the water feature creates a soothing backdrop, while the aromas released from the display area table vary throughout the day, enhancing the sensory journey. FOG Architecture, founded by Zheng Yu and Zhan Di, has offices in Shanghai and Chongqing, and has recently designed a minimalist Shanghai residence and a mobile bakery with grain sacks for walls.

The photography for this project is by Wen Studio. The design team includes Zhang Chi, Zhang Zhirui, Tang Mo, Xie Yi, Xiong Aijie, Zou Dejing, Zhan Di, and Zheng Yu. Lighting consultant Liben Design, Zhang Xu, played a crucial role in bringing the lighting design to life. This spa is a testament to FOG Architecture's ability to create spaces that not only relax but also captivate and heal.
