In light of escalating activities by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an increasing number of school districts are canceling classes scheduled for Friday. This decision is primarily driven by heightened safety concerns and a desire to exercise caution after a tragic incident where a woman lost her life due to gunfire involving federal agents.
Specifically, Fridley Public Schools announced that they will suspend in-person learning on Friday, joining the ranks of Minneapolis Public Schools, which already canceled classes on Thursday and has opted to do the same for Friday. Other institutions, including Harvest Best Academy and Minnesota Transitions Charter School, have also chosen to close their doors.
Furthermore, Columbia Heights Public Schools will implement a Flex Learning Day in place of traditional classes on Friday.
The situation has become increasingly tense over the past few weeks, with a notable rise in the presence of federal agents in the Twin Cities—an increase that has surpassed 2,000 agents recently. The severity of the situation was further underscored by the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good at the hands of an ICE agent. On the same day of this incident, ICE agents utilized chemical irritants outside Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and detained at least one staff member.
In response to these events, Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz has called for a 'Day of Unity' on Friday, urging residents to reflect on Good's life and encouraging participation in a moment of silence at 10 a.m.
