Arsenal 2-0 Brentford FC: Match Report rewritten for clarity and engagement
A dominant performance from Arsenal produced an 18-match unbeaten run across all competitions, capped by a powerful header from Mikel Merino and a late strike from Bukayo Saka.
A precise link between Noni Madueke and Ben White unlocked Brentford’s backline, allowing the right-back to deliver a clean cross for Merino to nod in for the second consecutive match. The goal showcased Merino’s scoring prowess this season, bringing his tally to five in the league and 21 for the year 2025.
Madueke, returning to the starting XI for the first time since the Manchester City game in September, imposed himself on Brentford’s defense. His bursts down the right tested Rico Henry repeatedly and earned a sharp save from Caoimhín Kelleher low to his right.
Brentford’s threat from set pieces remains formidable. A late corner nearly pulled the visitors back into the game when Kevin Schade headed fiercely toward goal, only for David Raya to acrobatically tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Arsenal continued to push down the right flank, with Riccardo Calafiori’s backheel feeding White, who found Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian forward, however, sent his shot narrowly over the bar from inside the box.
Madueke came close to scoring again as Declan Rice delivered a precise cross across the box. The ball reached him at close range, but his shot was blocked, keeping the scoreline intact.
Second-half resilience
Brentford stayed dangerous with a string of corners, testing Arsenal’s resolve. David Raya calmly dealt with the ensuing deliveries.
To lift the tempo, Eberechi Eze and Saka were introduced just after the hour mark, injecting more bite into Arsenal’s attack. They nearly altered the outcome after a quick transition down the right culminated in Rice delivering to Calafiori, whose low drive was saved by Kelleher and then gathered off Merino’s boot on the follow-up.
Long-range efforts from Arsenal stayed a feature of the afternoon. Rice cut inside and struck, but Kelleher parried the effort to Merino, who slipped while attempting a first-time finish, allowing the keeper to recover and avert danger.
As the game opened up late, Calafiori again caused problems, sprinting into space and firing a shot that Kelleher saved before the goalkeeper gathered the rebound.
The decisive moment arrived late when Merino found substitute Saka, whose strike beat Kelleher decisively after the goalkeeper got a hand to it. The ball slid into the net, sealing the victory.
What’s next
